By breaking three individual team records and competing for four program record-setting relays, Tyler played an instrumental role in the Bulldogs' second-place finish at the 2009 SCIAC Swimming & Diving Championships. He garnered NCAA "A" qualifying times in the 50 and 100 freestyle with times of 20.39 and 44.97, respectively. His win in the 100 freestyle served as the first-ever SCIAC performance in the event to dip under the 45-second barrier, resulting in new school, conference and conference meet records. In addition, he posted NCAA "B" cuts in the 100 butterfly (50.02) and the 200 freestyle (1:40.69) as the leadoff leg of the 800 freestyle relay. As a member of the 400 freestyle relay, he served on a squad that broke a 26-year-old conference record with a time of 3:02.46. Each relay in which he was a member earned an NCAA "B" qualifying mark as well. For his dominance throughout the meet, he was named the SCIAC Male Athlete of the Year for Swimming & Diving.
