Bulldog Football Team Earns Jostens/NADIIIAA Community Service Award
January 2, 2007

Redlands, CA - It was announced last month that the Bulldog Football team earned this year's Jostens/NADIIIAA Community Service Award for a single project.  During May 2006, members of the University of Redlands football team traveled to New Orleans to volunteer in the relief efforts following the destruction and devastation of Hurricane Katrina.  Over 50 student-athletes and coaches spent up to two weeks mucking out houses for Hilltop Rescue & Relief.

Jostens and the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA) co-sponsor this annual award, which honors the community service efforts of student-athletes among DIII schools.  The three categories for this award include one-time projects, an array of projects, and on-going projects.  This year's other award-winners are the College of St. Scholastica and University of Texas at Tyler.

"I continue to be extremely proud of the staff and young men involved in the Bulldog Football program," commented Director of Athletics Jeff Martinez.  "Their motivation for assisting with the hurricane relief efforts certainly was not to seek recognition; in fact, I am confident that each one of them would tell you that they gained more from this experience than they actually gave.  Nonetheless, this honor is greatly appreciated."

On January 8, Martinez will accept the trophy on behalf of the Redlands football team at the NCAA Convention in Orlando.

Plans are already underway for the Bulldogs to return to New Orleans for a week of service in late May 2007.
