  Collins Nabs a Giant Opportunity

Start spreading the news...another Occidental Tiger is heading to New York.

Quarterback Andy Collins '07 has agreed to join the New York Giants as an unsigned free agent.  Collins is the second Occidental Tiger to join the Giants in the past month.  Former punter Cory Ohnesorge ‘06 signed a free agent contract with the team April 10.

Collins will participate in a rookie mini-camp May 11 in preparation for training camp in July.  He will compete with starter Eli Manning, a former No.1 draft pick, and reserves Jared Lorenzen (Kentucky) and Tim Hasselbeck (Boston College) for a spot on the team.

Collins, a three-time SCIAC Offensive Player of the Year, prepared for his professional opportunity with successful performances at the Texas vs. The Nation Game Feb. 2 in El Paso and the American Football Coaches Association Aztec Bowl Dec. 16, where he became the first quarterback named Aztec Bowl Most Valuable Player.

Collins is the first Oxy quarterback in the NFL but not the first in pro football.  Tyler PaoPao '03 spent part of the 2003 season as a backup with the Ottawa Renegades of the Canadian Football League.  Collins is the ninth Tiger invited to an NFL training camp and the 13th in pro football overall.

Running back Vance Mueller '86, a fourth-round draft choice, played six seasons with the L.A. Raiders from 1986-1992.
