GREENSBORO, N.C. – To cap off an historical run by the Cal Lutheran baseball program, head coach Marty Slimak was selected as the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Diamond National Division III Coach of the Year, as announced today by the organization.
After earning ABCA/Diamond West Region Coach of the Year honors, released on June 29, Slimak was selected for the highest coaching praise at the DIII level and will be honored at the 74th Annual ABCA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. On Jan. 5, 2018.
In his 24th season at the helm of the Kingsmen, Slimak’s group broke through in his fourth [sixth in program history] trip to the DIII College World Series. His teams had previously reached the final game once [twice in program history], but the third time was the charm for the program as the Violet and Gold took the best-of-three series 2-1 over Washington & Jefferson. CLU dropped the opening game, 12-2, before rallying back for two wins, 12-4 and 7-3, on the final day of the season.
During his reign as the leader of the baseball program, Slimak has amassed a record-setting 688 victories with a 688-323-8 overall record. He has never had a losing season at CLU and his 2017 squad produced a 40-11 showing to mark the second time a CLU baseball squad reached the 40-win plateau.
