LA VERNE ALUMNI GAME TO BENEFIT ORTEGA FAMILY
Nearly $16,000 was raised at the University of La Verne Baseball
Alumni Game to benefit the James and Theresa Ortega Children
Memorial Fund. The event was held Saturday, February 7 at
Upland Memorial Stadium.
The event included a silent auction, which featured autographed
football jerseys from NFL Hall of Fame members Joe Montana and Dan
Marino. Among the other sports collectables included signed items
donated by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Los Angeles Lakers
and Los Angeles Clippers.
All proceeds from the auction, raffle and concession sales went
towards the memorial fund.
Among the spectators for the event included members of the
University of Redlands baseball team.
James Ortega played four seasons on the Leopard baseball team,
earning Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
(SCIAC) Player of the Year honors in 2004. James and his
sister, Theresa, lost both of their parents in the aftermath of the
Covina shootings on December 24, 2008, which claimed the lives of
nine Ortega family members.
