2008 SCIAC Distinguished Service Award Recipients

The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has chosen two admirable recipients for the 2008 SCIAC Distinguished Service Award.

This prestigious award is presented annually to those individuals who have made outstanding contributions and rendered such meritorious service to intercollegiate athletics at their institutions and to the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  The award will be formally presented during the SCIAC Awards Banquet in Chino Hills, California on May 7, 2008. 


John K. Roth, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges
Professor Roth was the Faculty Athletic Representative at Claremont McKenna College from 1969-2005.  During that time he served as the
Chair of the SCIAC Faculty Athletic Committee; significantly contributed
to the SCIAC's transition from NAIA to NCAA membership; supported the development of women's programs; and helped the SCIAC adapt to
the evolutionary changes within collegiate athletics. 





Rex Huigens, University of La Verne
Coach Huigens has dedicated his entire career to higher education and
has excelled on the field as a player, coach and administrator.  Having graduated from La Verne in 1970 with seven letters in three sports, Huigens went on to serve as assistant and head football coach, and head golf coach.  He has served his alma mater since 1971 in many roles as professor, chairperson in the Movement Sports Department, and Associate Athletic Director.  In 2007, Huigens was bestowed the university's Excellence in Teaching Award for undergraduate faculty.
